Commit to Kids

Helping organizations
prevent child sexual abuse

The Commit to Kids program is a step-by-step plan to help child-serving organizations reduce the risk of child sexual abuse and create safer environments for the children in their care.

When you entrust your child in the care of an organization, you want to be sure that it is a safe and nurturing environment. Unfortunately, organizations that work with children are vulnerable to attracting employees/volunteers who want to access and sexually abuse kids. While these organizations typically do criminal record checks, the vast majority of sex offenders do not have a criminal record. To be successful in providing a safer environment for children, organizations need to go beyond the record check process and take additional steps to ensure the safety of children in their care.

As a parent, you have a responsibility to ensure you choose organizations that have effective child protection measures in place. The Commit to Kids program is here to help you by working directly with organizations to:

  • Prevent child sexual abuse through increased awareness and education
  • Teach employees/volunteers the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour
  • Provide specific strategies on how to prevent abuse
  • Design programs that focus on child safety and supervision
  • Establish clear boundaries between adults and children
  • Ensure that allegations of child sexual abuse are handled in a sensitive, timely and effective manner
  • Ensure the highest standard of practice when working with children

We strongly encourage you to make sure that the child-serving organization that you send your child to has this program. If not, please speak to the program administrator about the importance of implementing Commit to Kids.
